Visual Directory- Visualization tool

VisualDirectory is a visual and interactive directory for efficient browsing of a website's content. Each item is represented by an image, and all the images are arranged into a rectangular grid, providing the overview of the entire content. The items are classified into a number of categories, allowing users to specify in which criteria they are interested in. Images that don't match the criteria will be filtered out. If the mouse is moved over an image, then it gets magnified and further information about the corresponding item is shown.

The visual directory can be maintained (additions, removals, modifications) directly by the webmaster. The visual directory is implemented as a Flash application that can be viewed in any web browser that has the Flash plug-in installed.

  1. Nayla, the visual directory concept is one of the fastest and far reaching concept that is constantly evolving, such as

    I believe some other applications include;

    1.Visual Directory - Explorer is a tool that cleans up hard drive. It presents a pie chart (or optionally, a bar chart) where each slice is a subdirectory on your computer. Clicking a slice in the pie chart brings up a pie chart of that subdirectory, allowing to recourse.

    2.A visual directory is also used to provide the best contemporary services to advance the status of Deaf and hard of hearing people

    3.In fact some of the companies/institutions use a visual directory for board members/employees/ board members………please visit one of the websites that we created back in college…. THEY RULE http://www.theyrule.net/2004/tr2.php)
    (we compiled a list of largest board of directors for various companies in the States who make decisions that affect and play instrumental roles in making decisions that affect our lives…it’s a must see I highly recommend it.....!!! just click on any company or companies in the US and you will see how these ‘smart’ entities are interrelated to other companies…..

    Let me know once you have visited.... :)

  2. Murtaza,
    I've just visited theyrule.net and as you said it's absolutely marvelous! it is a veritable example of visual directories combined with other methods of visualizaton such as mapping. I loved the 'find connection' option, companies could really make huge use out of such a tool especially when profiling investors for instance. Instead of searching for directors straight from search engines, here we can get the whole picture, all the directors and (so cool) other companies that they direct. The interactive nature of the site is a huge plus as well, adding to it's novelty! It's great to know that you've been a part of this site, and I think every organization should have such a tool. it would be very helpful in many fields, especially supply chain management. Suppliers could be profiled in the same way and so on. Thanks alot! :)

  3. Nayla, Glad that you enjoyed it.
    It's a very informative web site, My contribution to it was very minimal (We were doing this as part of a final project in one of the Communication and Neural Network Class) , but a few of my friends worked very hard and developed it further. It's amazing. Actually, I sort of thought you would and generally everyone who visits likes the 'connection option', it does exhibit the true nature of corporate world and how they divide and rule. There are other options as well...like dragging the pictures, expanding, figuring out the history of each person...etc
    Thanks for visiting and of course pass on the word.

    Ciao for now
